The New American Theatre Announces Move to
Two Theatre Complex in the Heart of Hollywood

LOS ANGELES (February 8, 2018) — The New American Theatre (NAT) celebrates their 23rd season by moving back to Hollywood, near where the award-winning company got their Los Angeles start.  As of March 1st, NAT’s new home is in a two-theatre complex at 1312 N. Wilton Place, between Sunset and Fountain, in the heart of Hollywood. The space was formerly occupied by The Underground Theatre.

The venue, which will be called The New American Theatre, houses two intimate theatres: the mainstage (49 seats) and the black box (40 seats) in addition to a lobby and dressing rooms. NAT will present its upcoming Spring and Fall seasons as well as its professional acting studios in the new location. During downtime, the venue will be available for rental, and NAT is hoping to partner with other membership companies that seek a home. The venue will also host The Hollywood Fringe Festival this summer.

“Our company is filled with ambitious actors and theatre-makers who’ve been clamoring to have a permanent home of our own in which to tell our stories,” says NAT Artistic Director Jack Stehlin. “This opportunity pre
sented itself and we jumped at the chance. We’ll be making improvements and enhancements to our new space so that it’s ready and comfortable for our upcoming season.”

The New American Theatre’s 2018 season will focus on new works, including two world premiere plays, two festivals of new one act plays, and staged readings of new works. The New American Studio Ensemble will continue to meet each Saturday to study acting and work on projects. NAT’s newly formed writer’s circle will meet monthly with actor-members to share new work and receive valuable feedback.

About The New American Theatre
Named one of the top-ten 99-seat theatre companies by CBS Los Angeles, The New American Theatre is a creative, artist-helmed membership theatre company. Throughout its prolific history, NAT has presented over 200 Main Stage, Second Stage, and One Act plays, enjoying critical acclaim, awards and nominations from the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, LA Drama Critics Circle, Back Stage, LA Weekly, LA Stage Alliance Ovations, and more. The company’s annual Festival of New One Act Plays, now in its 23rd year, accepts submissions from playwrights from all over the world.  In 2017, the company launched its full-length plays competition, furthering the company’s commitment to develop and produce New American plays.

NAT seeks to inspire, educate and nurture artists and our community towards a thoughtful and humane world view through the art of story-telling. NAT helps young theatre artists find their voices, cultivate social consciousness and prepare for a lasting career. The company supports new and established playwrights, incubates new plays, and seeks to make a lasting, life-long impression on
our community – inspiring the audience to continue provocative conversations long after the curtain closes.
NAT’s world premiere productions have enjoyed a life beyond our stages:

  • Three NAT productions moved Off-Broadway in New York (Man.gov, Harm's Way, The Job) Harm’s Way also received the prestigious Pen USA Literary award;
  • Titus Redux was a selection of the Radar-LA International Theatre Festival;
  • Two plays first produced by NAT have become feature length films (The Job, Sister Cities);
  • Two plays first produced by NAT have become short films (Bridesmaid #12, Game 7);
  • Several plays first produced by NAT have been published by major publishers;
  • One short play (Exigence) was based on a documentary entitled Victor’s Last Class by the playwright/company member and now has international distribution;
  • Sister Cities has been presented by 15 different theatre companies in the United States and abroad.
  • The New American Theatre is the subject of a documentary called “Without A Net” which had its official screening in 2015 and is currently on the Festival circuit.
